Samaritan 500P defibrillator

Description

HeartSine®’s samaritan® PAD 500P defibrillator, equipped with CPR Advisor (or CPR Advisor), is the most innovative device currently available on the market that complies with the AHA/ERC guidelines, which place emphasis on the importance of performing effective Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in order to increase survival rates in cardiac arrest.

In fact, the CPR Advisor is able to provide the rescuer with effective feedback on the effectiveness of the CPR he or she is performing on the patient.

Cardiac arrest

Cardiac arrest, or cardiocirculatory arrest, is when the heart can no longer circulate blood within the body effectively (thus failing to adequately supply vital organs) or when it ceases to beat completely. Cardiac arrest, therefore, is a reversible condition of clinical death that, if not adequately and promptly treated, is destined to turn into irreversible biological death due to the lack of oxygenation to the main organ of the central nervous system, the brain.

The main causes of cardiac arrest are ventricular fibrillation (chaotic and very rapid arrhythmia causing uncoordinated contractions of the heart muscle leading to cessation of cardiac output), ventricular tachycardia (arrhythmia characterized by a ventricular rate greater than 100 beats per minute) coronary artery disease (disruption of the coronary arteries),respiratory arrest, suffocation, changes in the structure of the heart, hypothermia, electrocution, drowning, a drastic drop in blood pressure, andalcohol and drug abuse. Sometimes, however, the causes of cardiac arrest are still unknown. In addition, nausea, palpitations, dizziness, dyspnea, weakness or chest pain may occur before cardiac arrest. The person with cardiac arrest suddenly falls to the ground unconscious. He or she has difficulty breathing (gasping or “gasping” or complete absence of breath) and is unresponsive even when shaken vigorously. Therefore, in order to avert the patient’s certain death, prompt action must be taken. The only life-saving therapy in such cases is the use of a defibrillator alternating with appropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. Here then, comes into play the HeartSine® samaritan® PAD 500P with its CPR Advisor.

Operation of the RCP Advisor and differences with competitor RCP Feedbacks

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, abbreviated as CPR, is performed by alternating between cardiac massage, aimed at sustaining blood circulation to vital organs, and insufflation of air through the victim’s mouth to oxygenate his or her lungs. In the event of cardiac arrest, well-executed cardiopulmonary resuscitation can increase the chances of salvation by up to 75 percent. The samaritan® PAD 500P defibrillator from HeartSine® can guide the rescuer, in real time, while performing chest compressions on the patient. The instructions that can be received are as follows: “Compressions well performed,” “Deeper compressions,” “Faster compressions,” and “Slower compressions. These commands are also displayed on the front of the device to ensure that the rescuer can perform CPR as appropriately as possible. All this is done, precisely because of the CPR Advisor with which the device is equipped. The samaritan® PAD 500P, in fact, through the analysis of the impedance cardiogram (ICG) performed on the patient, is able to measure the impedance variations in his chest cavity, thus determining the real effectiveness of the chest compressions performed by the rescuer. In this way, the defibrillator is able to guide the user in delivering the intensity and speed of compression required for the specific subject. The goal to be achieved while performing cardiac massage is to hear the message “Compressions well performed” and then display the green CPR indicator light. In case of cardiac arrest, in fact, the greatest difficulty is not in using an automatic (or semiautomatic) external defibrillator, but in performing CPR maneuvers correctly. Sometimes, unfortunately, CPR is not performed effectively even by experienced rescuers. With HeartSine’s Samaritan® PAD 500P, on the other hand, throughout the intervention time, the rescuer receives REAL FEEDBACK on the efficiency of his or her maneuvers.

Other competitive defibrillators, however, have a CPR Feedback system based on the depth of chest compressions performed on the patient. It is evident, however, how this feedback is not at all realistic, let alone reliable: a chest compression of 5 centimeters on an 80-kilogram man may not be sufficiently effective; the same depth of compression on a 30-kilogram girl may even cause her rib cage itself to rupture.

Other distinguishing features of the samaritan® PAD 500P defibrillator

The samaritan® PAD 500P defibrillator from HeartSine® offers several unique features. In fact, in addition to the presence of theCPR Advisor, it also has the following distinctive features: ease of use (visual and audible controls that assist the rescuer throughout the intervention);IP56 protection rating against dust and water infiltration (the highest on the market); 1.1 kg in weight and 56% smaller size than other AEDs on the market; 8-year warranty; and proprietary SCOPE™ biphasic technology (waveform capable of autonomously adapting to different patient impedances and low power consumption).
